Amherst Floral (#338) chair pad Photo: Gloria Lonergan AntiquesThis is a photo of the original rug, hooked in 1877 by John Filker, Amherst, Ohio. A glass cloche covers flowers, in a large urn, set on a pedestal. It is flanked by similar blooms. Beneath, it is dated 1877, with a garden snake, moon and stars. The stripes used in the urn are carried through in diagonal bands on the border. All this, combined with the fact that a man hooked this rug, makes it a very special piece of American folk art.
