The original piece was "japaned" back in 1900 which was a protective black coating

The bracing on the bottom was meant to disperse heat on wood stoves and is now more of a cosmetic decoration

For some reason it has been very difficult to keep these fives in stock as they move very quickly. Fives are a little harder to find but for whatever reason we don't have them on the shelf too long.
